Saanich (W̱SÁNEĆ) Nation Reef Net Fishing Site

On August 9th, 2014 the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation went reef net fishing to reclaim a practice that the colonial government outlawed a hundred years ago.

East Point Lighthouse

Located on the eastern tip of Saturna Island close to US waters, the station at East Point was established in 1888, but rebuilt in its current steel skeletal form in 1948, then de-staffed in 1996, and became part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve of Canada in 2006. East Point is infamous for being the place where the orca whale Moby Doll was captured to later be put on display by the Vancouver Aquarium. The first orca to ever be displayed in a public aquarium exhibit, Moby Doll was instrumental in changing widely held negative perceptions of orca whales and for spurring

Portlock Point Lighthouse

This small lighthouse sits on the eastern end of Prevost Island, one of the Southern Gulf Islands, and overlooks the BC Ferries passing through on their Tsawwassen - Swartz Bay Route. The original lighthouse was built in the 1890's but the current one is from 1987, although Portlock Point has been fully automated and de-staffed since 1964. Portlock Point, along with Richardson Bay, are part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve of Canada and are owned and operated by Parks Canada.

Active Pass Lighthouse

A distinctive sight from the BC Ferries route between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen, the Active Pass Lighthouse is located on Mayne Island in the Gulf Islands. The original lighthouse was built in 1885 but has undergone several changes and the current lighthouse tower was built in 1969 and automated in 1997. Today the site is open to the public and is a popular day trip destination.

Eddie Reid Memorial Library (Saturna Island Library)

The Eddie Reid Memorial Library on Saturna Island was started in 1990 and is run by volunteers. The Library's book collection includes: fiction, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, humour, short stories, poetry, classical literature, young adult and children's books. There are also a number of topical non-fiction, biography and autobiography, reference and local history books. There is a collection of DVD movies as well as some audio books. To become a member, the Library requires proof of Saturna Island residency, identification and and a Saturna phone number.
