Located on the eastern tip of Saturna Island close to US waters, the station at East Point was established in 1888, but rebuilt in its current steel skeletal form in 1948, then de-staffed in 1996, and became part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve of Canada in 2006.  East Point is infamous for being the place where the orca whale Moby Doll was captured to later be put on display by the Vancouver Aquarium.  The first orca to ever be displayed in a public aquarium exhibit, Moby Doll was instrumental in changing widely held negative perceptions of orca whales and for spurring greater interest in their conservation.  Today, orcas as well as other marine mammals and seabirds can be observed at East Point.
